Brain Tumors
Malignant (cancerous) brain tumors can form within the brain and then invade and damage adjacent tissue. They can also reach the brain by
spreading(metastasizing) through the bloodstream from other cancerous regions in the, which occurs in 25 percent of persons with cancer in
other areas of the body.
Oral Cancers
The mouth can be affected by several cancers, including cancer of the lip, tongue, jaw, and salivary glands (these include the three major groups
of oral glands: parotid [next to the ear]; submandibular [under the side of the jaw]; and sublingual [the lower part of the mouth and in front of the
tongue]). The vast majority of oral cancers are of the squamous (scale-like) cell type. Such cancers mostly develop in people over age 40,
especially those who use tobacco and/or alcohol. Though preventable, they affect 30,000 Americans and are responsible for approximately 8,000
deaths each year.
