Cancer is a disease in which some of the body's cells divide too fast and don't develop to perform their normal function. They divide so quickly that they produce too much tissue and a malignant (cancerous) tumor develops. Cancers may metastasize--that is, spread--as the tumor grows. Cancer is spread w hen cells break off from the tumor and are carried to other parts of the body by the bloodstream or lymphatic system.
